EXTENDING DECORATIVE LIGHTING PROGRAM FOR

PLAZA PALM TREES TO YEAR ROUND

Recommendation

Staff recommends that Council approve extending the agreement with West Coast Lighting to keep Pier Plaza Palm Trees lighted year round at an annual cost of $8,800.

Background

As part of the City’s holiday decorations, Council authorized staff to expend $4,400 annually to provide white twinkle lights for the Palm Trees. West Coast Lighting provides installation, ongoing maintenance and replacement, and removal for the 16 Palm Trees.

Due to the extremely positive feedback about the lights from the community and businesses, staff requested an estimate for lighting the trees throughout the year.

Analysis

Since there is a premium attached to holiday lighting costs, moving to the year round program does not increase the costs proportionally to the additional time.

For the added cost, West Coast Lighting will replace all lighting strands twice a year and will make routine inspections (every two weeks and weekly during the holidays) and will maintain bulbs and strands as necessary throughout the year.

With Council’s approval, the additional cost of $4,400 will be appropriated from the Downtown Enhancement Fund to the decoration program. This fund has been used in the past to pay for the downtown portion of City holiday decorations.

FISCAL IMPACT:

Appropriate $4,400 from the #109 Downtown Enhancement Fund to the Public Works Downtown Enhancement Account #109-3301-4319.

Balance remaining in the Downtown Enhancement Fund: $250,595
