IMG BEACH BASH 2001
BEACH CONCERT BANDS

 

Recommendation

Staff recommends that Council approve free concerts on the south side of the Pier from 5:15 PM – 6:00 PM, Thursday, June 7, 4:30 PM. – 7:00 PM, Friday, June 8, and Saturday, June 9 in conjunction with the IMG Beach Bash event.

 

Background

At the March 27, 2001 meeting, Council approved Mervyn’s Beach Bash 2001, a sports and beach festival featuring professional volleyball, skateboarding, in-line skating, and BMX bike competition on the beach. At that time, staff recommended that the request for concerts be considered at a later date to facilitate finalization of performers line-up by IMG.

Council Members have been provided with cassettes that feature two songs from each of the proposed bands:

• Sabotage (local youth band playing Thursday only)
• Joe Wood Band*
• Dave Wakeling of English Beat
• Stroke 9
• Tonic

*Performed at Beach Bash 1999 and Beach Bash 2000.

A cassette tape is available for public review in the Community Resources Department Office, 710 Pier Avenue.

 

Analysis

IMG met with City staff to develop an operations and security plan for the event and concerts. The stage will be located at the south side of the Pier, similar to the City’s "Sunset Concerts on the Beach." City staff will require IMG to provide stage security. Police will be assigned to the area and Fire staff will be located back stage for the duration of the concerts.
