Jazz Plaques on the Plaza

Recommendation

The Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources Commission recommends that Council:

  • Approve in concept, a program of commemorative plaques for Jazz artists who performed in Hermosa Beach.

  • Approve the Plaza area as the location for the placement of these plaques.

  • Approve a Commission subcommittee (Bell/Fishman) to work with Ozzie Cadena to develop guidelines, a funding plan, and selection criteria for the program to be presented to Council at a future meeting.

Background

At the February 6, 2001, meeting, the Commission listened to a proposal by Jazz enthusiast, Ozzie Cadena, about commemorative plaques for jazz musicians.

Analysis

The Commission was cognizant that Council was aware of this proposed program and had even discussed the Pier Head as a possible locale for the plaques. As such, they thought it would be prudent to communicate with Council about the program prior to taking any further action at the Commission level.

The Commission sentiment was that the Pier Head may be an excellent location for plaques commemorating surfers and that the Plaza (possibly the lighting cubes and/or other areas) would be a more appropriate place to commemorate jazz (since the Lighthouse is on the Plaza).

Understanding that the Council would ultimately wish to have a more detailed proposal prior to making any final decisions about the plaques, the Commission’s Historic Subcommittee indicated a willingness to work with Mr. Cadena on the project with Council’s endorsement.
