Surfers' Walk of Fame

Recommendation

The Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Commission recommend that Council approve the Plaza as the location for the Surfers' Walk of Fame contingent on working out the technical details and on eliminating the "relief" aspect to the proposed bronze plaques.

Background

City Council authorized Roger Bacon to continue with the PCH banner program (used to raise funds for the Vetter Windmill restoration) to raise money for a Surfer's Walk of Fame.

At the April 13, 1999 meeting, Roger Bacon presented a design, selection committee, and proposed location for the Walk. At that time, Council directed the Commission to review the proposed design and location for the program. The location was deemed the most important so that it is sure to compliment the future design of the Municipal Pier and the Plaza.

Analysis

The Commission discussed alternative locations and design issues with Mr. Bacon including the Municipal Pier.

The Commission approved the design as submitted but advises that the plaques not feature "relief" elements that may pose safety hazards for skaters or pedestrians.

The Commission had concerns that the Plaza location may present some difficult technical issues for the City including: (a) the slope, (b) drainage, (c) saw-cutting, (d) an accurate layout and count for the plaques, and (e) ongoing maintenance issues.

With adequate resolution to these issues, the Commission recommends approval of the Plaza location as proposed by Mr. Bacon.

Fiscal Impact: TBD
