SCHEDULING APPLICANT INTERVIEWS FOR UNSCHEDULED VACANCY OF UNEXPIRED TERM ON PARKS, RECREATION AND COMMUNITY RESOURCES ADVISORY COMMISSION

 

Recommendation :

It is recommended that the City Council schedule a meeting prior to its regular meeting of Tuesday, February 22, 2000, for the purpose of interviewing applicants for the unscheduled vacancy on the Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Advisory Commission to fill an unexpired term ending June 30, 2001, with appointment to be made later that evening during the regular February 22 Council meeting.

Background :

At its adjourned regular meeting of January 25, 2000, the City Council conducted interviews of five of the seven applicants for the unscheduled vacancy on the Parks, Recreation and Community Resources Advisory Commission (created by the November 1999 election of Kathy Dunbabin to the City Council). At its regular meeting that night, the Council appointed Geoffrey Hirsch to fill that unexpired term and advised the other applicants that appointment to a second unexpired term (due to the automatic vacancy of Todd Kuh) would take place February 22, after the legal posting requirements had been met, and directed that an interview meeting be scheduled only if new applications were received.

The required notice was posted January 26 in the City Clerk's office, the Library and the outdoor display case at City Hall. To date, no new applications have been received. It is recommended, however, that the Council schedule a short interview session prior to the meeting of February 22 meeting to interview the two applicants--Peter Tucker and Monica Shiel Westley-- who did not attend the January 25 interview meeting. Mr. Tucker said he did not receive the message about the interview. Ms. Shiel Westley said she missed the interview due to a miscommunication with my office. By conducting this interview session, the Council would be able to consider all six remaining applicants, as well as any new applicants, for appointment at the regular meeting.
