ENDORSEMENT OF SPECIAL OVERLAY CONCEPT FOR AREA CODES.
Recommendation:
That the City Council endorse the concept of an overlay area code for cell phones, fax machines, pagers, point of sale devices and modems.
Background:
The L. A. County Board of Supervisors has requested that each of the cities consider endorsing an overlay for cell phones and non-voice telephone numbers as a way of stopping the large number of new area codes. The City Council actually took this position once before when we were involved in the split of the 310 area code. This proposal would seem to make it much easier for our residents and businesses to have fewer area codes.
