The South Bay Cities Association Council of Governments has taken a position opposing the redesignation of the area code for our area. The attached resolution spells out the reasons why this change would be a burden on our communities.


I would urge the City Council to adopt the resolution and direct staff to forward it to the appropriate agencies.

RESOLUTION 98-


A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF HERMOSA BEACH, CALIFORNIA, SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF A RELIEF PLAN THAT WOULD ALLOW THE CITY OF HERMOSA BEACH AND THE SOUTH BAY CITIES TO RETAIN THE 310 AREA CODE AND THE PLAN IS TO ENCOMPASS THE ENTIRE BOUNDARY OF THE CITY OF HERMOSA BEACH AND THE SOUTH BAY CITIES.







WHEREAS, the City of Hermosa Beach has thousands of licensed businesses which will be negatively impacted by the new area code; and,


WHEREAS, a previously proposed relief plan by the California Public Utilities Commission would allow the City of Hermosa Beach to maintain the 310 area code and would keep the South Bay cities under the same area code; and,


WHEREAS, the South Bay cities include the cities of Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates and Torrance; and,


WHEREAS, said plan would maintain the South Bay's regional identity and contain costs for businesses;


NOW THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Hermosa Beach does hereby resolve as follows:


The City Council of the City of Hermosa Beach, California, supports the development and adoption of a relief plan that would allow the City of Hermosa Beach and the South Bay cities to retain the 310 area code.


BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the plan is to encompass the entire boundary of the City of Hermosa Beach and the South Bay cities of Carson, El Segundo, Gardena, Hawthorne, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes Estates, Rancho Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates and Torrance.


PASSED, APPROVED and ADOPTED this 14th day of April, 1998.
